What are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-written answers shown at the top of Google Search results, with links to the pages they were built from.
Google launched them in the US in May 2024 and has since rolled them out to more than 200 countries and 40 languages. For a buyer searching which tool, service or product to choose, the overview sits above every blue link, so it is often the first answer they read and the only one some of them need.
That makes two questions matter as much as rankings: does the overview name your brand, and does it link to your pages? An AI Overview checker answers both for the searches your buyers actually type, the way a Google AI Overview checking tool should: from the live results, not from a guess. To watch the same searches every day, across every AI engine, there is the AI visibility tracker.

2We write the searches
Ten searches a buyer would type into Google about your category: best-of lists, comparisons, how-tos. Your brand name is never in them.

What this Google AI Overview visibility tool shows
Six readings, built from every AI Overview your searches returned.
Visibility
How many of the searches show an AI Overview that names your brand. A search with no overview counts as one where you were not shown.
Your cited pages
Whether the overview links to your site, and which of your pages it picked.
Position
Where your brand sits inside the overview when it is named: first in the list, or last.
Competitors
Every brand the overviews name instead of you, ranked by how often.
Sources
All the pages Google cited, from any site, and which brands each of them helped.
Sentiment
How the overviews describe you, from 0 to 100, so a recommendation does not read the same as a caveat.
An AI Overviews checker is not a rank tracker
A rank tracker tells you where a page sits in the blue links. The overview above them plays by different rules.
Cited, not ranked
An overview links a handful of pages. Third place in the results below does not mean a link in the block above.
Named, not linked
The overview can name a brand without citing its site. Being named in the text still puts you in front of the buyer.
Read first, not scrolled to
The overview sits above the results, so it is read before any page a rank tracker reports on.
Generated, not fixed
The same search can show a different overview, or none at all, from one day to the next.
How Google picks sources for AI Overviews
AI Overviews are written by a Gemini model working on top of Google Search. It does not wander the open web: it reads pages Google has already crawled and indexed, and links the ones its answer leans on.
- Only from the index
- A page has to be crawlable, indexed and allowed in snippets to be cited. Google says no special markup is needed, but nothing it cannot fetch or show will reach the overview.
- Beyond the top result
- Google fans a search out into related sub-questions and pulls pages for each. Cited pages usually rank well for the search or a close variant, but not necessarily first.
- Answer-shaped passages
- A passage that answers the question directly, like a definition, a comparison or a short list of options, is easier to quote than a page that circles the topic.
- Trusted third parties
- For buying questions, reviews, comparison sites and forums are cited often. What they say about you can matter as much as your own pages.
How to appear in Google AI Overviews
Start from the searches you lose, and work on the pages Google is already choosing.
Find the searches you lose
The report lists the searches where the overview named competitors and not you. Those are the ones to work on first.
Make your pages eligible
Check that Googlebot can fetch the page, that it is indexed, and that nosnippet or a tight max-snippet is not keeping it out of the overview.
Answer the question on the page
Put the direct answer near the top, under a heading that matches the search. Use lists and tables for options and comparisons.
Get named where Google looks
Open the sources the overviews cited. Reviews, listicles and threads that mention competitors and not you are where a mention changes the answer.
Frequently asked questions
Enter your domain at the top of this page. This AI Overview checking tool writes ten searches a buyer in your category would type, runs them on Google, and reads each AI Overview for the brands it names and the pages it links. Checking by hand means searching one query at a time, logged out, from the right country, and writing down what you saw.
No. Google shows an AI Overview when it judges a generated summary to be useful, which is common for questions, comparisons and research searches and rare for navigational ones such as a brand name. In the report, a search that returned no overview counts as one where your brand was not shown.
Each overview is generated, not stored. It can change when Google's index changes, when the wording of the search changes slightly, with location, and with Google's own experiments. The same search can show a different overview, or none, on different days, which is why one check is a snapshot rather than a verdict.
Not necessarily. Ranking well helps, because overviews draw on pages Google already trusts for the topic, but an overview links only a few pages and often pulls them from related searches. A page in position two can be left out while a page further down, or a review site that mentions you, gets the link.
A checker, like this one, runs your searches once and reports what the overviews say today. A tracker runs the same searches on a schedule and keeps the history, so you can see when you gained or lost a place in the overview and which competitor took it.
