Google is changing how users find links and publisher profiles in AI Overviews and AI Mode, announcing five updates on October 15, 2026. The changes range from higher placement for links to more prominent related articles, but they are at different rollout stages - and Google reported no measured result for publisher traffic.

The announcement covers features that are launching, expanding or still being tested, rather than a single release available everywhere.

What is changing

Google described five updates to its AI Search interfaces:

  • Higher inline links: Google said it was launching changes that would place links higher in AI responses more often.
  • Official website suggestions: A section being tested near the top of some responses features one or two relevant official websites, along with explanations of how each could help.
  • Expanded news carousels: Google said timely news carousels were starting to roll out in additional locations and languages. They highlight users’ Preferred Sources and appear for a wider range of queries.
  • More visible related articles: Links at the end of some AI responses are becoming more prominent and clickable, with thumbnails. Google did not provide a rollout schedule.
  • Clickable creator and publisher names: Testing began during the week of October 15 for names on video results in AI Mode that link to Search profiles.

Google’s illustrations show how some of those changes appear. One AI Overview displays two news cards side by side, with more search results below. Another groups related publisher links, short descriptions and thumbnails in a "Dive Deeper" section.

Source selection is not a traffic measure

Google said the number of people using Preferred Sources had increased more than sevenfold since the beginning of 2026. That figure tracks users of the source-selection feature - not the number of links shown or clicks generated.

It also does not establish whether users visit publishers after encountering links in an AI response.

Other figures cited in the source material measure different aspects of AI Search. Peec AI data reported by Search Engine Roundtable showed that the daily average share of AI Overviews with an external link in the answer text was 26.2% on September 20, 2026. That measures whether a link was present, not whether someone clicked it. Search Engine Roundtable reporter Barry Schwartz disclosed a small investment in Peec AI.

Earlier click findings do not measure the updates

A Pew Research Center analysis of Google searches conducted in March 2025, reported by 9to5Google, found that 1% of searches with an AI summary led to a click on a link inside that summary.

The analysis also found that users clicked a search-result link in 8% of searches with an AI summary, compared with 15% of searches without one. Google disputed the study’s methodology and whether its query set was representative.

Neither those March 2025 findings nor the September link-presence data measure publisher visits following the October changes. Google’s announcement describes new placement and profile features, while their measured effect on publisher traffic remains unreported.
